Parts of the Gray Zone are industrial, paved in swathes of gray and home to sprawling, blocky buildings; but much of it is suburban, divided into plots with single small buildings on them. Some have been torn down for materials — unlike structures in the city's core, these are built on wooden frames, some of which are still sound enough to be useful. Others, particularly in the south, have decayed into worthlessness, crumbling and overgrown. The rest are in various states of failure and decay, as though once the population began to flee, the neighborhood itself lost its will to endure.

Once, the Gray Zone had a different name, but now it is a region being abandoned; those who live here still are the stubborn and the desperate, unwilling or unable to go somewhere else. Because of this, it is one of the few areas where changelings outnumber humans in population. Though bordered by True City to the west and Meridian Core to the north, ferals cross over into the Gray Zone with dangerous frequency from the hazardous No Man's Land to the south. Wild predators are less common, though birds, deer, rodents, and wild dogs have settled into many of the overgrown suburban neighborhoods.

Between its suburban nature and its sparse population, the Gray Zone is a place where a capable scavenger can survive alone, provided they don't run afoul of ferals. Most inhabitants do live together in groups, however, for safety and companionship. Despite this being a derelict region, about as undesirable as can be, Gray Zone packs do a surprising amount of trade with inhabitants of the Ark — guiding scholars and technomancers through this region and the southern hazard zones is a lucrative business, if very risky to life and limb.
